Piano for Pleasure: Private Lessons for Adults EXPR 009.51, CRN 15249
It's never too late to learn to play the piano! Learn key names, body/hand position, scales, chords, rhythmic values and note reading in a relaxed environment. Uncover a variety of musical styles, including 12 bar blues. Must have access to a piano or keyboard for practice of weekly assignment. "Play Piano Now" (#17193) published by Alfred, is available at music stores or on-line and needed for the first lesson. Upon registration, the instructor will contact you regarding a time slot. Contemporary Mixed Media ARTS 074.51 CRN 17014
In this creative course, students will be guided by the instructor through an exploration of various mixed-media tools, mediums and techniques. Participants will engage in focused exercises with the concepts of design, composition, mark-making, and color in a visual journal, on paper, and on canvas. Developing a growth mindset alongside a sense of play andexperimentation, students will discover new ways of seeing with a constructivist spirit. As students delve into the exercises, they will gain a better understanding of how to be more intentional yet deepen the expressionistic, intuitive, and personal side of 2D art-making in a variety of mediums. Over the six weeks, students will collaborate, share and build on their skills and insights, culminating in a final artwork that embodies their refined creative perspectives, tools, and techniques. No experience is necessary. This course is for people who want to broaden their skills and creative expression through various mediums in a nurturing, explorative community. Introduction to Music Technology EXPR 062.51, CRN 17000
Music technology is a broad field of disciplines that includes topics such as recording and mixing, live sound, synthesis, and hardware performance. This course will cover accessible techniques in these fields, focusing on tools that will empower students with the ability to engage with music technology in their lives. Curriculum will include microphones, digital audio workstations (DAWs), musical instrument digital interface (MIDI), live-sound setups, digital and hardware synthesizers, hardware performance, and other topics in music technology based on the interest of the students. By the end of the course students will be able to record and mix audio to produce audio projects, set up and control live sound scenarios, and gain a deeper understanding of electronically-produced music and the hardware used to make it. Painting: Personal Practice Intensive Feedback ARTS 075.51 CRN 17015
This course is for students who are comfortable with their painting practice and who can benefit from learning how to approach effective critique for others, receiving personalized feedback, and having the regular structure of group studio sessions. Each class will begin with a group critique followed by time to paint and individual feedback with the instructor. Participants are responsible for their own supplies. Come ready to begin on the very first class! Bring your painting supplies (oil or acrylic) and a recently completed work or work in progress that you would like the group to discuss. Participants should have an active, current painting practice. In this class students will learn how to make a hat with buckram. Buckram is a very stiff fabric that has been starched. When you sew wire to the edges of the buckram you can make many strong yet flexile shapes Have you ever wanted to make a really wide brimmed hat? Or a tall stovepipe hat? Learn the basic techniques to build a sturdy, stable hat. You will learn how to make a pattern for a hat, create the hat and learn how to sew wire to the edges of the buckram by hand or machine and then how to cover the hat with the fabric of your choice. By the end of the class, you should be able tocomplete a hat from the buckram base to the finished fabric with embellishments of your choice‐ flowers, feathers, beads etc. Some sewing skills would be helpful but not required. Pattern paper and some glue will be provided. Please bring good fabric scissors, sketchbooks, some pins, heavy quilting thread, measuring tape and a ruler
